{"id":10,"date":"2009-01-24T14:30:17","date_gmt":"2009-01-24T14:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.oscarc.net\/?p=10"},"modified":"2018-01-28T06:21:33","modified_gmt":"2018-01-28T06:21:33","slug":"humorous-reminders-of-common-writing-mistakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.oscarc.net\/index.php\/2009\/01\/24\/humorous-reminders-of-common-writing-mistakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Humorous Reminders of Common Writing Mistakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A selection of advice from generations of Teaching Fellows at Harvard University, edited by Gordon Silverstein.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things to keep in mind when you write an essay:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Avoid run-on sentences they are hard to read.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Never use no double negatives.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Use the semicolon properly, always where it is appropriate; and never where it is not.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Reserve the apostrophe for it&#8217;s proper use and omit it where it is not needed.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Verbs has to agree with their subjects.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">No sentence fragments.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Avoid commas, that are not necessary.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">When you reread your work, you will find on rereading that a great deal of repetition can be avoided by rereading and editing.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">A writer must not shift your point of view.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Do not overuse exclamation marks!!! (In fact, avoid them whenever possible!!!)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">And do not start a sentence with a conjunction.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Place pronouns as closely as possible, especially in long sentences, as of ten or more words, to their antecedents.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Hyphenate only between syllables and avoid un-necessary hyphens.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Write all adverbial forms correct.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Don&#8217;t use contractions.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">It is incumbent on us to avoid archaisms.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Steer clear of incorrect verb forms that have snuck into the language.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixed metaphors.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Avoid modernisms that sound flaky.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Avoid barbarisms: they impact too forcefully.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Never, ever use repetitive redundancies.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Everyone should be careful to use singular pronouns with singular nouns in their writing.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">If we&#8217;ve told you once, we&#8217;ve told you a thousand times: avoid hyperbole.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Also, avoid awkward or affected alliteration.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Do not string a large number of prepositional phrases together unless you are walking through the valley of the shadow of death.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Always pick on the the correct idiom.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">&#8220;Avoid overuse of &#8216;quotation&#8217; &#8216;marks.'&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Never use more words than are necessary to get your point across: be concise.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Awayz check you&#8217;re spelling. (Your spellchecker would only pick up one of the two errors here.)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Always be avoided by the passive voice.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Every sentence a verb.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sizedtext\">Last but not least, avoid cliches like the plague: seek viable alternatives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A selection of advice from generations of Teaching Fellows at Harvard University, edited by Gordon Silverstein.
